RUN A SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT
Pre-Tournament DutiesSelect a date. Review the Tournament Sign-up sheet to see what dates are available and contact the Commissioner to have the date selected is still available. If date is available, Commissioner will place date on tournament calendar. When requesting a tournament date, the following information must be provided to the Commissioner:
| Tournament Playing Site | |||
| Number of Courts | |||
| Number of Team Acceptable | |||
| Time facilities available | |||
| Tournament Host (Must be non-playing, non-coaching) | |||
| Any Special circumstances | |||
| Any Additional Costing elements |
Sanction the tournament.
All NIVC must be sanctioned by the Commissioner. The Commissioner will attempt to find a knowledgeable, non-coaching, non-playing tournament director at the site at all times. If running more than three courts, additional site directors should be on hand to assist. It is recommended that there be one site director for every two courts.
The site directors should have be able to get all needed forms from the hosting site. See section that states all items needed to host tournament or home matches.
Accepting tournament entries. The Commissioner will accept entries until 7 days prior to the tournament unless otherwise published or stated. After this time, tournament will be open to any registered USAV teams and teams on the waiting list. Final schedules will be published 3 days prior to each tournament on the NIVC Web Site.
Verify rosters / seed tournament
Verify the team rosters. (Rosters will be available on the NIVC Web Site.) Verify these prior to the event.1.
Verify the certification of referees and scorekeepers with the list on the NIVC Web Site. These will be the only individuals that can officiate for the teams during tournament play. Any individuals not sanctioned as a verified referee or scorekeeper will be fined $50.00 and the team will be responsible for paying the fine prior to participating in any additional tournaments. Payment must be in certified check or cash. Personal checks may be accepted under certain circumstances.2.)
Seed the tournament. If there is an insufficient number of teams to fill a recommended pool format, the Commissioner may choose to contact other team representative of teams not already registered in the tournament in an attempt to fill the pools.3.)
Format the tournament
Within a pool, A=1st Seed, B=2nd seed, 3=3rd Seed, etc. Teams are ranked from 1 (the highest seed) through 20 (the lowest seed). Teams may be moved as many as 3 positions in either direction, as necessary, to avoid seeding teams constantly in the same pools in a division. The seeding shall be determined as follows:
Seed 2 Team Pools Ct1 Ct2 3 Team Pools Ct1 Ct2 Ct3 4 Team Pools Ct1 Ct2 Ct3 Ct4 A 1> 2 |
4 < 3 5 > 6 8 < 7 9 > 10 1 > 2 > 3 |

Schedules
Tournaments shall be conducted with the schedules below which have been determined by the Commissioner. They are the only schedules that may be used for sanctioned tournaments. Any exceptions require a waiver from the Commissioner. The waiver must be granted in advance. The site director must provide written notification to the Commissioner on any tournament whereas the schedule has been altered. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of home matches by the tournament host.
Home team is first team listed on all schedules. Visiting team calls the coin toss.

*A lunch break is necessary when scheduling 4 team pools and must be scheduled unless all teams agree AT THE CAPTAIN'S MEETING not to do so. If there are two or more pools in the tournament and one is a 5-team pool, the 4-team pool should take the designated lunch break to keep as close as possible to the schedule of the 5-team pool since a 4-team pool usually takes less time to play than a 5-team pool.

Tournament Day Duties
Before play begins,
| Roll call of the teams - hand out roster for
each team to verify. They must cross off anyone not playing, correct uniform numbers,
initial the roster and return it to site director before playing. Make sure all rosters
have been returned to you. |
| Ask for any written uniform waiver or check the
roster for any waivers given by Commissioner. |
| Go over officiating requirements. |
| Identify raters. The Commissioner will make
attempts to have raters available for certain designated tournaments. Each team should
know those prior to the tournaments. |
| Explain any changes in the schedule. If 4, 6 or
7 teams pools, have captains vote if they want to eliminate or lower the scheduled
30-minute lunch break. If there is not complete agreement by all teams, the 30-minute
break will be taken. |
| Since playoffs are not necessary when there is
only one pool, review number of teams for other pools. |
| Go over ground rules (ceilings, beams, baskets,
obstructions, etc.) |
| Remind teams to start matches on time and
follow warm-up times strictly. |
| Teams are not to leave the site without first
checking with the site director. |
| No food or beverages in the gyms unless
otherwise stated. Absolutely no alcoholic beverages are allowed. |
| Ask for questions. |
| State the starting time of the first match
(start on time!). |
Forfeits
If a team does not have enough players to start their match, the following procedure must be followed:
At the scheduled time the match is to begin, the official calls both teams to the end line. No time out may be taken until a legal number of players are present to start the match. The official declares the first game a forfeit, with a score of 15-0. An interval of up to 10 minutes shall be allowed for the team to produce sufficient players to play the next game. If the team has six players present prior to the expiration of this interval, play shall be gin immediately. If, after the 10-minute interval, a team does not have at least six players present and ready to play, the second game shall be declared a default. If the match consists of three games (applies to pool play only, an additional 10-minute interval shall be allowed before declaring the match a forfeit. Teams may play or warm up during this time.
Score of each defaulted game is 15-0. Score of a defaulted match is 2-0 or 3-0, depending on the number of games scheduled to play.
If neither team is complete at the beginning of a match, both teams forfeit the first game and both scores are recorded as 0-15. The 10-minute countdown begins. Both teams are entitled to the entire 10 minutes. If one team becomes complete and is ready to play, the incomplete team has the remainder of that 10-minute interval to make its team complete. If both teams are complete before the expiration of the 10 minutes, the remainder of the match is played immediately. If one team is still incomplete at the end of the 10 minutes, the game shall be declared a forfeit.
In a double default, if the match is two games, each team shall be charged with the loss of two games by default. If it is a three-game match, each team will be charged with the loss of three games by default. The score of a double default is 0-15 for both teams and 0-3 or 0-3 for the match.
| Collect score sheets and tally match results after each match. | |||
| Relax and have a good day! |
Playoffs
Determine playoff schedule using the following guidelines:
These playoff methods are to be used only during regular season. End of season tournament schedule is pre-determined by agreement at annual organizational meeting.
Determine teams for officiating playoffs.
The team that loses the last Match of pool play must stay and officiate the first playoff match (see #3 below for the exception). If they are in playoffs, the winner stays. If both teams make playoffs, the team who officiated the last pool play match must stay.
If there is a one-game tie breaker to determine who goes to playoffs, the criteria in #1 above determines who officiates the tie breaker. The loser of the tie breaker will officiate the first round of playoffs.
If there are teams with first round byes (6 or 3 team playoff), the team(s) with the bye(s) will officiate the first round and the loser of the last match may leave (after checking with the site director).
Once in playoffs, the losing team must stay to officiate the next playoff match.
If there is more than one team to officiate the match, the teams may either flip a coin to see who stays or split the duties by each providing the needed officials.
Post Tournament Duties
Report tournament results. A written report of the tournament results must be delivered or mailed to the Commissioner within two days after completion of the tournament. Because tournament results are used to seed the next tournament, it is imperative that the following items be returned to the Commissioner by the Tuesday following the tournament:
